Achtet bei der Konfiguration der Fritz!Box darauf, dass USB3 aktiviert ist (der seitliche Anschluss steht als Default auf 2.0) und der LAN-Anschluss auf 1 Gbit läuft, der steht normalerweise im Öko-Modus auf 100 Mbit.
Einbindung des USB-Sticks per /etc/fstab
Ich habe mich im Wesentlichen an die Anleitung aus dem Wiki-Artikel von ubuntuusers.de gehalten, wobei ich mich für Variante 2 mit automatischer Einbindung per /etc/fstab entschieden habe, da der PC als Mehrbenutzer-System mit Backup-Möglichkeit arbeiten soll.
Damit liegen die Login-Daten in meinem Profil und die anderen Anwender brauchen nichts extra etwas eingerichtet bekommen. Was die einzelnen Parameter genau bedeuten, bitte unbedingt im verlinkten Artikel nachlesen!
Ich war übrigens immer zu ungeduldig mit der Einbindung und hab mich gewundert, warum keine Dateien/Ordner angezeigt werden. Gebt dem System nach dem mounten ein bisschen Zeit, dann sollte es klappen.
Geschwindigkeitstests
Für die Tests habe ich einen “alten Artikel” aus dem Weblog ausgekramt. Ich habe die Befehle nur um time ergänzt, damit zum Befehl die Bearbeitungszeit ausgegeben wird nach dem Abschluss.
Schreiben auf den Stick

Mit o.g. Konfiguration komme ich im Test auf 11,7 MB/s. Ein ganz ordentlicher Wert für meinen Anwendungsfall (Texte schreiben oder mal ein paar Bilder drauf schieben).
Lesen vom Stick

Das Lesen vom Stick läuft mit vernünftigen 22,1 MB/s. Damit würde man sogar Streaming machen können, falls meine Bekannten dafür doch mal noch einen Anwendungsfall haben sollten.
Eigentlich dachte ich ja, das Thema wäre zumindest bei den Technik-/Datenschutz-interessierten Personengruppen bekannt, aber dem scheint wohl nicht so. Deshalb will ich es hier nochmal erwähnen, auch wenn das Thema an sich schon ein paar Jahre alt ist.
Als Machine Identification Code (MIC) – auch Farbdruckermarkierung, yellow dots (gelbe Punkte), tracking dots (Punkte zur Nachverfolgung) oder secret dots (geheime Punkte) – wird ein digitales Wasserzeichen bezeichnet, das von bestimmten Farblaserdruckern und -kopierern auf jeder gedruckten Seite angebracht wird.
Der Code soll eine Identifikation des Geräts ermöglichen, mit dem ein bestimmtes Schriftstück erzeugt wurde, und dadurch Hinweise auf den Hersteller des Schriftstücks geben. Das kann nützlich sein, wenn der Beweis der Urheberschaft einer Fälschung geführt werden soll.
Der Hersteller Canon bekam dafür im Jahr 2004 übrigens den Big Brother Award im Bereich Technik. Verwendet wird diese Technik aber von fast allen Herstellern in den meisten Geräten, wie man auch auf der Seite der Electronic Frontier Foundation nachlesen kann. Einzig OKI und Samsung scheinen es (in den getesteten Modellen) nicht einzusetzen, was aber nichts bedeuten muss.
Da mich interessierte, ob unser Firmen-Drucker (ein Kyocera FS-C8020MFP) diese Funktion auch unterstützt, habe ich einfach mal eine Seite eines Textdokuments mit Farbanteil ausgedruckt und davon einen Bildausschnitt mit dem Flachbettscanner wieder eingscannt. Beim Scanner sollte man eine recht hohe Auflösung verwenden, alle automatischen Filter ausschalten die möglicherweise das Ergebnis verzerren und natürlich ein unkomprimiertes/verlustfreies Dateiformat benutzen, also z. B. kein JPEG.
Wenn man dann am Ende nah genug heran zoomt, sieht man tatsächlich einzelne gelbe Punkte, die über das Blatt verteilt sind. Ich habe dazu mal einen Bildausschnitt freigestellt:
Ich denke, man sollte die Punkte auf der PNG erkennen können.
Was ihr nun mit dieser Information anfangt, überlasse ich euch. Ändern kann man es eh nicht, außer man sucht sich explizit einen Hersteller, der sowas nicht macht.

Nach einer kleinen Recherche bin ich heute endlich auf eine Lösung gestoßen, wie sich meine NAS automatisch auf ein USB-Laufwerk sichern lässt, ohne dass ich manuell eingreifen müsste, wenn die Festplatte die Festplatte an die NAS angeschlossen wird. Ich bin halt faul.
Bisher hatte ich ja einen Freecom Musicpal, den mir der Caschy vor einer ganzen Weile angedreht hatte aber der machte immer mehr Probleme in Form von Verbindungsabbrüchen zum WLAN, Stummschaltung obwohl Lautstärke voll aufgedreht, WLAN-Passwort vergessen, Sender nicht verfügbar und was weiß ich noch alles. Im Endeffekt machte das Gerät keinen Spaß mehr und entsprechend haben wir es daheim auch so gut wie nicht mehr genutzt.
Da wir aber doch ab und zu auch mal Radio hören wollen, musste eine Alternative her. Für mich standen dabei als Kriterien hauptsächlich fest, dass ich sowohl UKW als auch WLAN-Radio haben wollte. Nach dem Durchstöbern diverser Shopping- und Bewertungsportale (hauptsächlich Amazon und geizhals.at) bin ich dann bei den Geräten von Grundig hängen geblieben, da diese insgesamt sehr gut bewertet sind und auch preislich im Rahmen liegen.
