USA 2016: Key West, Tag 2

Heute wollten wir ja eigentlich nach Dry Tortugas fahren, aber wie bereits geschrieben wurde daraus nichts und so sahen wir uns statt dessen noch einige Sachen in Key West an, die wir gestern schon ausfallen hatten lassen, weil wir ohnehin heute einen Tag mehr hatten. normal

Unser erster Besuch führte uns zum Friedhof von Key West, welcher am höchsten Punkt der Insel gelegen ist (ich glaube es waren 4 m über Meeresspiegel), damit die Toten nicht durch das Grundwasser gestört werden. cool

Geocaching-bedingt kamen wir danach an dem kleinen Gato Village Pocket Park (osm.org) vorbei, in dem eine kleine Hausfassade und eine riesige Zigarre herumstehen. Seltsame Kombination aber war an sich ein schönes Plätzchen. cool

Weiter ging es dann an die Südseite der Insel zum Emma Carrero Cates Pier und dem Southernmost Point, der eigentlich gar nicht der südlichste Punkt der Insel ist. Aber der tatsächlich südlichste Punkt liegt auf Militärgelände und ist deshalb für Touristen nicht zugänglich. sad

Nächster Stopp auf unserer Tour war danach das Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum, für das wir schon am Vortag am Aquarium ein Kombiticket gekauft hatten.

Von hier aus ging es weiter in den südwestlichen Teil von Key West, wo sich der “Fort Zachary Taylor State Park” befindet, eine Festungsanlage mit zugehörigem Strand. Eintritt kostet ein paar US-$ und lohnt sich wahrscheinlich eigentlich nur, wenn man an den Sandstrand möchte. Da wir aber zu Fuß und ohne Badesachen unterwegs waren, beließen wir es beim Besuch des Forts.

Schlaue Leute hätten vermutlich das Hemingway-Haus schon am Vortag angesehen und wären heute in der Frühe mit dem Auto an den Strand gefahren, um dort ein paar Stunden zu entspannen. So als Tipp für Leser, die da auch mal hin wollen… normal

Auf dem Rückweg zum Hotel kamen wir dann noch am Museumsschiff USCGC Ingham vorbei, welches wir aber nicht besuchten, sondern nur ein paar Bilder machten.

Nachdem wir den Nachmittag mit diesem und jenem verbracht und bei den Five Guys zu Abend gegessen hatten, machten wir uns auf den Weg zum Mallory Square, wo wir heute nochmal einen schönen Sonnenuntergang erleben wollten.
